How Income is Calculated

Income is calculated by household from the following sources:

Included in calculation
  • Gross employment income
  • Government pensions and associated supplements
  • Superannuation pensions
  • Government benefits and allowances — including Austudy, Abstudy, Carer payment, Family Tax Benefit Part A and B, JobSeeker, and Parenting payment
  • Income from investments (e.g. bank interest, equities)
  • Other income — net business income, trust income, foreign pensions, and child support payments
Excluded from calculation
  • Specific purpose payments — e.g. NDIS, disability compensation payments, inheritance, and lump sum compensation payments
  • Superannuation earnings, until the person reaches pension age or starts receiving a pension or annuity from that fund
  • Commonwealth Rent Assistance — excluded from income calculation, however it is used in the rent calculation

  • Overseas assets converted to Australian dollars
