How Income is Calculated
Income is calculated by household from the following sources:
Included in calculation
- Gross employment income
- Government pensions and associated supplements
- Superannuation pensions
- Government benefits and allowances — including Austudy, Abstudy, Carer payment, Family Tax Benefit Part A and B, JobSeeker, and Parenting payment
- Income from investments (e.g. bank interest, equities)
- Other income — net business income, trust income, foreign pensions, and child support payments
Excluded from calculation
- Specific purpose payments — e.g. NDIS, disability compensation payments, inheritance, and lump sum compensation payments
- Superannuation earnings, until the person reaches pension age or starts receiving a pension or annuity from that fund
- Commonwealth Rent Assistance — excluded from income calculation, however it is used in the rent calculation

- Cash lodged with a financial institution

- Shares, bonds and investments
- Superannuation payouts where the person has reached preservation age and meets a condition of release

- Any debts currently owed to you
- Overseas assets converted to Australian dollars
