Simon Hudson is a former serving Royal Australian Air Force veteran, a Flight Lieutenant with an undiagnosed bipolar disorder and depression who became homeless.
The Challenge
Simon ended up couch surfing with no fixed address for two years. His life was in complete disarray, with no possession or documentation. He had one suitcase.
How We Helped
The Air Force Association reacted to Simon’s homeless situation and contacted the RAAF Veterans’ Residences Trust which provided him with an unfurnished apartment in one of its Melbourne complexes. The Association assigned a ‘buddy’ to monitor him.
Simon also required medical treatment for cancer, including surgery, through which his buddy walked alongside him to ensure all specialist appointments were met. He was advised by his doctor at the time his expected lifespan was no longer than two years without treatment. He was assisted in obtaining Department of Veterans Affairs entitlements.
The Outcome
Accommodation in a Trust apartment enabled Simon with the help of his Air Force Association ‘buddy’ to focus on his health and well-being. He is a qualified teacher of English.
He no longer needs treatment.
Simon now has a home for the foreseeable future.
